5 Driving Tips for Santorini

Start early in the morning

Narrow caldera paths get extremely congested between 10:00 and 17:00. Begin your excursions before 9:00 AM to avoid the worst of the crowds.

Watch out for narrow roads

Many of Santorini's roads are single-lane or very tight. Download Google Maps offline before you go — mobile signal is patchy in remote areas.

Park outside Fira and Oia

Use the public car parks on the outskirts and walk in. It saves time, stress, and potentially a scratched bumper on the caldera steps.

Fill up in Fira

Petrol stations are scarce on the island. Never let your tank run low — the next station could be 15+ km away.

Photograph the car before you drive off

Do a quick walk-around with the rental agent and photograph any existing marks. This protects you from unfair damage claims on return.

Best Places to Visit with a Rental Vehicle

Oia

World-famous sunset — arrive early to find parking before the crowds

Perissa & Kamari

Black sand beaches — a car is by far the most comfortable option

Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The prehistoric Pompeii of Greece — parking available nearby

Vlychada

Scenic marina with tavernas — a quiet, authentic corner of the island

Emporio (Nimborio)

Medieval village with almost no tourists — worth every kilometre

Cape Akrotiri Lighthouse

Stunning views — narrow road, ideal for ATV or scooter

Important: Santorini Requires a Local Rental Company

Renting a car from a Piraeus-based company does not cover Santorini island. For a car, ATV, scooter or buggy within Santorini, you need a local operator. We recommend santorini-rentme.com — a trusted local company operating since 2014, with pickup from the port, airport and hotels.
